Natural Timber

Sun Ray Kelly presented his Natural Timber construction at CNBW. Sun Ray lives in his own forest in Washington and has developed a sculture-like building technique using locally available wood. Sun Ray's philosophy is that the forest plants more trees than it can support. By selecting those trees which may not survive (twisted, forked, etc) he helps the healthy one grow stronger.

Many Caribbean islands were deforested by humans and by hurricanes. There are pines on Middle Caicos but I'm not yet sure if it is possible to harvest any; they may be protected. Maybe I can make use of weakened trees; or at least plant enough to provide for some future generation of natural builders.

A boulder and rubble foundation will form the base of a study.
Bark is stripped from the timber.
This overly forked and curved tree might not be well suited to survive in nature but it makes an ideal truss for the roof of the study.
