Middle Caicos is home to 39 archaeological sites. The most recent find is on Pelican Cay, a low island connected to the Middle Caicos by a sandbar a quarter mile long. The site is marked by a pile of broken and crumbling Conch shells suggesting that Pre-Columbian indians processed their harvest here.

The Caicos Islands are a chain of coral uplift islands. They are built of limestone laid down as the skeletons of coral reefs over countless years. In places, such as Pelican Cay, you can see the coral remains reexposed as the sea erodes away the rock.
