The East End

Gamble Point

Near the tip of Gamble Point stands this stone tower. It marks a property boundary from times gone by. This photo was taken from on board Dolphus's fishing boat. The only way to get here by land is to walk over a mile from Bambarra Boat Landing over a rocky shoreline I dubbed the Lunar Sidewalk. The dark gray limestone is mostly flat but is often broken into boulders or pocked with "craters".

An Osprey nest sits atop the tower. At the time of our first visit, it was occupied by a family with young chicks.

Half Creek

The northeast corner of the island. Chris stands before a protected bay inside the point of Half Creek. Snorkelling was good here.
A fish packing plant used to operate here. Two ruined structures are all that's left now. Debbie and I are standing on what used to be a cistern. To the left is a former warehouse.

Lorimers

In the village of Lorimers, Mrs. Greene sells handmade hats and bags. She weaves them from the leaves of the Silvertop Palm.

Cathy visits with Mrs. Greene on the steps of her Lorimers home.

Mr. Greene is a respected builder. Judging from the appearance of the Greene home, it is a well-deserved reputation. Owning a home is a never-ending job, however. Mr. Greene was adding lattice to the screened porch when we visited.

The source of Mrs. Greene's palm leaves. These palms can be found all over the island. As you can see, they aren't very tall. Another type of palm is used to thatch beach huts.
