In The Water | |
Flamingos abound. North Caicos has it's Flamingo Pond in the center of the
island. They can be seen from afar at the roadside stop on the main road.
These flamingos we found wading among the cays between Middle and North.
The water here is shallow. Near here, Middle Caicos locals used to walk to North Caicos for provisions, carrying them back on their heads.
Albert Robinson, our guide, dove for conch and lobster. We dove, too, but didn't find many. Albert must know the secret.
One of Albert's "fishing" techniques was to jump overboard with mask and
snorkel and hold on to the end of a rope while being towed over the fishing
grounds.
This meant someone else had to drive. That's me at the helm.
East Bay Cay is this area's "Iguana Cay". The Turks and Caicos Rock Iguana is smaller than the giant lizards of Central America (or the local pet store). And, at least on this island, they're not tame. They hide below the scrubby brush and run away quickly when approached. There's a well camoflaged little fellow in the foreground here. He's in the middle of the dirt path, just to the right of the bush on the left. This is the best photo I could get.
Bottle Creek Lodge on North Caicos
The first place you come to on North Caicos as you drive in from the ferry is
Bottle Creek Lodge. Howard and Cheryl Gibbs bought an abandoned house and
transformed in into an ecotourism lodge. Howard did all of the renovation and
was hoping to open just weeks after we visited him.

Ferry | |
My son, Chris, at the ferry landing. This lies in the mangrove swamps on the west side of the island. The channel was dugout by hand during low tides decades ago.
The ferry makes one of it's weekend runs to North Caicos. There's room for two vehicles (unless they're big like this van or a full size pickup). The day we went seemed to be furniture day. Several families had ordered furniture that was delivered to a store on North Caicos. We happened to run into our friend Albert there. He had a new bed that he was going to carry over on top of his fishing boat. Instead, we carried it, and his groceries, back in our truck on the ferry. |
